The Roanoke Middle School Tennis Program began in 2007 and has had 4 seasons of play to date. Tracy Sledd of the RVTA helped the USTA to organize and get the league off the ground in spring of 2007. The RVTA and the USTA sponsor the league and it is run as a community based organization.
The Roanoke Middle School season now runs in the fall in the months of September and October. The league on the fall of 2010 ran with teams and 77 participants. Grades 6-8 at the following middle schools participated: Cave Spring, Woodrow Wilson, Hidden Valley, James Madison, Northside and Glenvar. The club middle school league hopes to offer early tennis experience, thus growing the interest of playing on local high school teams and USTA leagues in the future and promoting tennis as a life-long sport.
Several more middle schools would like to have teams but do not have them because of a lack of coaches- William Byrd, Faith Christian, Andrew Lewis, and Glenvar. If you are interested in helping middle schoolers at one of these schools learn tennis and are available in the months of September and October please contact the current Middle school coordinator- Dustin Bays @ firstname.lastname@example.org or 540-728-1445.
